Title: Falling Down (Five Flights) (LJ version) (6223 words)
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] smirnoffmule
Rating: Teen/PG-13
Characters and/or Pairing: Apollo/Midnighter
Summary/Description: Five scenes from Apollo and Midnighter's early life. Sometimes you don't know if you're flying or falling until you hit the ground.

My comments: Since [personal profile] boundbooks has been going through A03 recs, I was originally going to dig up a fic not on A03, but I am seriously in love with this story. I'm a sucker for pre-Authority Apollo and Midnighter stories and this is a pitch-perfect version. smirnoffmule has a strong grasp on both Apollo and Midnighter's personalities and plants the seeds for their relationship alongside the characters' exploration of who they are now that their previous lives have been stripped away. The writing is gorgeous and full of nuance, taking Apollo and Midnighter from post-surgery awakenings through their betrayal by Bendix and the start of their years on the run.

(Hopefully I have everything formatted correctly; I didn't add the 'group: the authority' tag since the fic's pre-Authority and all. 'group: stormwatch'? I also hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes reccing this.)

A very Jenny Sparks and gen set of recs!

Survivor's Sojourn by Indigo
Excerpt: "When he awoke the morning of the 31st, just before the last adventure, the last problem, the last crisis of the year arose -- he knew.

Jenny Sparks' number was up."

Notes: A slice of introspection by the Doctor about the death of Jenny Sparks.

On a note related to fanfiction and The Authority, Yuletide sign-ups are now open. Yuletide is an annual rare and obscure fandoms fanfiction exchange hosted on Archive of Our Own (AO3). The Authority is on the list of eligible fandoms, which means that you can sign up to write and/or receive The Authority fic, in addition to many other fandoms.

You can sign-up here until 8:00 pm Eastern US time, Sunday, November 20th, but an Archive of Our Own account is needed. If you would like to sign-up for Yuletide, but don't have an account, give me your email address either by a comment on this post or Private Message (PM), and I'll send you an invite. :)

Jenny Sparks gets contemplative while keeping an eye on her team. The character voice sounds very true to Jenny, and I imagine that this is exactly what she does on those free nights on the Carrier.

I've decided that I'm going to post fanfiction recommendations until I either run out of Authority fic to rec or Wednesdays. :)

First one up is one of my all-time favorites. It is not only the best time travel fic in the fandom, it's one of the best time travel fics I've ever read. The author does a really nice job with our short look at what Apollo's life might have been like as a civilian, not to mention that the Midnighter's internal monologue is just spot-on.

The Worst Time Travel Fic in the Fandom (12141 words) by favicondee

Ah, time travel; the most abused plot device ever. Don't expect any surprises in this one...
